A Rhythmic Masterpiece for the Modern Landscape
Hosta 'Abba Dabba Do' is a large, vigorous cultivar bred by Tony Avent. He registered it in 1998 as a sport of 'Sun Power'. The lance-shaped leaves have a deep green centre and a bold gold margin that widens with age. It handles more sun than most variegated hostas and grows well across Canadian zones 3–9. Plant it as a specimen anchor in borders or as ground cover in partially shaded beds.
-
Sun-Tolerant Versatility: Rare for a variegated cultivar, it handles significantly more sunlight than most hostas without losing its crisp colour contrast.
-
Dynamic Twisted Texture: The lance-shaped leaves feature a subtle twist and wavy edges, providing a tactile, layered look that draws the eye toward the centre.
-
Impressive Mature Scale: This vigorous grower reaches up to 177.8 cm (70") in width, making it a dominant presence and excellent ground cover.
-
High Pest Resistance: Its heavy leaf substance and Sun Power heritage make it naturally more resistant to slugs and snails than thinner-leaved varieties.
-
Lavender Summer Spikes: In midsummer, tall scapes rise above the gold-edged canopy to display elegant, pale lavender flowers.

Grower's Tip: Place this cultivar where it receives morning sun for the most vibrant gold margins, with afternoon shade in hotter regions. At our Bécancour, QC trial fields, we ship only after visual confirmation of True to Type variegation — the gold margin emerges after the first flush of growth.
