A Vertical Blue Accent for Borders and Containers
Charles Purtymun registered Hosta 'Abiqua Trumpet' in 1987 at Walden West. He selected it for its narrow, folded leaves that flare upward like a trumpet bell. The foliage emerges with a soft glaucous blue coating that deepens to blue-green through summer. Hardy from zones 3 to 9, it suits Canadian shade gardens from borders to containers. Its distinctly upright, vertical habit sets it apart from typical mounding hostas.
-
Unique Trumpet Shape: The leaves are narrow, deeply cupped, and folded. They flare at the tips to create strong vertical interest.
-
Upright Architectural Habit: This hosta grows distinctly vertical, not outward. It suits tight spaces and mixed containers well.
-
Glaucous Blue-Green Colour: It emerges with a soft blue coating. The colour deepens to a rich blue-green through summer.
-
Heavy Seersucker Texture: Despite its compact leaf size, the rugged, puckered surface provides excellent natural slug resistance.
-
Tidy Compact Presence: It reaches a tidy mature width. It fits easily at the front of a border.

Grower's Tip: Plant in dappled shade to protect the upright leaves from drying out. We wait for the trumpet fold and heavy texture to emerge at our Bécancour trial fields. Only then do we ship, ensuring every plant is True to Type.
