A Monumental Legacy of the Lake Superior Region
Van Wade of Wade and Gatton Nursery registered Hosta 'Agawa' in 2007. He named it for the Agawa people of the Lake Superior region as part of his American Indian Series. It grew from a self-pollinated seedling of 'Elegans', inheriting that cultivar's massive, textured presence. The thick, puckered leaves emerge rich blue in spring and mature to deep blue-green through summer. It grows reliably across Canadian zones 3–9 and anchors large-scale woodland landscapes with commanding presence.
-
Colossal Landscape Presence: One of the true giants, maturing into a substantial mound reaching nearly 1 m (39") in height and over 1.3 m (51") in width.
-
Stunning Colour Transition: Emerges with a rich blue hue in spring that gradually matures into a sophisticated deep blue-green as the season progresses.
-
Heavy Texture and Substance: Thick, puckered foliage provides elite durability against the elements and natural resistance to slug damage.
-
Towering Floral Display: In late June through July, massive 102 cm (40") scapes rise high above the foliage, bearing elegant near-white tubular flowers.
-
Collector Rarity: A scarce selection from the American Indian Series that adds botanical history and collector status to any serious hosta garden.

Grower's Tip: Give 'Agawa' generous space and deep, organically enriched soil — its Elegans heritage demands room to reach full imperial scale. At our Bécancour, QC trial fields, we monitor the seersuckered texture and blue-to-green transition before every plant ships True to Type.
