A Divine Mist of Fragrance and Frost
Hosta 'Ambrosia' is a heavenly large-stature cultivar from hybridizer Bob Solberg. Solberg registered it in 2016 as a sport of the beloved H. 'Guacamole', elevating that lineage with a heavy glaucous wax coating that creates a misty blue margin and frosted haze over the entire leaf surface. The light yellow centre and blue-green margins maintain their ethereal appearance throughout summer, with fresh wax-covered growth continuing even in the heat. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9. Plant it where morning sun can draw out its powerful late-summer fragrance.
-
Fragrance: Large pale lavender flowers among the most fragrant in the hosta world — a standout feature that fills the garden in late summer.
-
Frosted Colour: Heavy glaucous bloom provides a unique silvery layer over the yellow and blue-green variegation, unlike any other Guacamole sport.
-
Sun Tolerance: Inherits excellent sun tolerance from its Guacamole parentage, thriving in brighter light that would scorch other varieties.
-
Growth Rate: Vigorous — quickly forms a massive symmetrical mound reaching over 135 cm (53") in width at maturity.
-
Extended Season: Continues to produce fresh waxy foliage throughout summer, keeping the clump looking pristine until autumn frost.
-
Size: 60 cm (24") tall × 135 cm (53") wide.
-
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliably cold-hardy across Canada.

Grower's Tip: 'Ambrosia' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and several hours of morning sun maximizes both its fragrant blossoms and the glaucous wax development. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we verify the heavy wax coating and vibrant variegation at spring emergence before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Bob Solberg selection.
