A River of White in the Valley of the Leaf
Originally registered by John Kulpa in 1999 and named in honour of his mother, Hosta 'Ann Kulpa' is a standout seedling of 'Pin Stripe Sister' that brings a sophisticated, tri-colour effect to the shade garden. This medium-to-large cultivar is celebrated for its thick, heart-shaped leaves that feature wide, dark green margins and a distinctive narrow centre. The central blaze emerges a vibrant gold in the spring before brightening to a clean ivory white by mid-summer, often separated from the margin by a unique celadon-green jetting. Unlike many white-centred varieties that struggle with a slow growth rate, 'Ann Kulpa' is noted for its exceptional vigour and ability to establish a dense, mounded clump quickly in diverse Canadian landscapes.
Why It Stands Out
-
Luminous Colour Transition: The leaf centres shift from a fresh spring yellow to a brilliant white, holding their brightness exceptionally well throughout the season.
-
Distinctive Jetting: Features "celadon" streaks where the light centre meets the dark green margin, adding extra layers of visual depth.
-
Excellent Substance: The thick, moderately corrugated foliage provides natural slug resistance and a sturdy, high-quality feel.
-
Striking Petioles: The ivory-white centre often runs down the length of the petiole, creating a cohesive, "rivers of white" look from the ground up.
-
Vigorous Performance: Known as an outstanding grower that reaches its impressive mature spread faster than many of its variegated peers.

Grower's Tip
To get the most dramatic contrast from Hosta 'Ann Kulpa', plant it in a location with rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture. While it is highly tolerant of the varied conditions found across Canada — from the Atlantic coast to the Prairies — it truly thrives when protected from the harsh midday sun, which keeps the white centres from scorching. At our Bécancour nursery, we take pride in verifying every division as it emerges from the soil. This True to Type verification ensures that the striking, multi-toned variegation is perfectly stable and the plant is robustly healthy before it is shipped to your garden.
