Hosta 'Dancing Crane' | Upright Yellow Hosta, Speckled Red Petioles & Blushed Scapes

Description

A Graceful Arc of Gold That Transforms Through the Season

Don Dean introduced Hosta 'Dancing Crane' and registered it in 2020 through a complex multi-generation cross. The foliage emerges upright and bright yellow early in the season, then cascades into a flared mound of greenish-yellow as summer progresses. Heavily speckled red petioles and pink-blushed scapes deliver striking contrast against the soft foliage. It performs reliably across Canadian gardens from Zone 3 through 9. This is a medium-sized specimen equally at home in a shaded border or a statement container.

  • Seasonal Colour Transformation: Starts as an upright yellow mound early in the season, then opens into a flared, cascading greenish-yellow display by midsummer.
  • Speckled Red Petioles: Heavily speckled red stems provide vivid contrast against the soft yellow-green foliage throughout the growing season.
  • Blushed Scapes & Bracts: Scapes reach 66–76 cm (26–30") and emerge yellow-green with a distinctive pink blush, adding layered colour interest.
  • Pale Lavender Blooms: Bell-shaped flowers with translucent margins appear from mid-July through early August, followed by light green seed pods.
  • Rippled Yellow Margins: Ovate leaves with a cordate base carry slightly rippled yellow margins and 8–9 vein pairs for refined textural detail.
Feature Specification
Size (H × W) 38 cm × 89 cm (15" × 35")
Hardiness Zone 3–9
Colour Yellow to greenish-yellow leaves; red speckled petioles; pale lavender flowers
Light Requirements Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Give 'Dancing Crane' room to perform its full seasonal arc — the early upright yellow phase and the later cascading mound are two distinct displays in one plant. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC, where it handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Dancing Crane', verified before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
