Hosta 'Kiwi Blue Baby' | Intensely Blue Glaucous Compact Mound Hosta

Description

Small in stature, serious in blue — a self-pollinated gem from the Kiwi Series.

G. Collier registered Hosta 'Kiwi Blue Baby' in 1999 as part of the celebrated Kiwi Series from New Zealand. Both parents are H. 'Halcyon', making it a self-pollinated seedling that concentrates all the best traits of that legendary blue. Its 4–5" leaves carry an intense blue-green colouring with a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces and 7–8 vein pairs that give each leaf real visual weight. At just 20 cm (8") tall and 50 cm (20") wide, it forms a tidy, mound-like clump with a slow, deliberate growth rate — perfectly suited to containers, rock gardens, and small-space shade plantings across Canada.

  • Leaf Colour & Texture: Intensely blue-green with a heavy glaucous bloom on both the top and underside; 7–8 prominent vein pairs; slightly rippled margins; cordate base.
  • Size & Habit: 20 cm (8") high × 50 cm (20") wide; dense, mound-like habit; slow growth rate — ideal for containers and small shaded spaces.
  • Flowers & Scape: Tubular pale lavender blooms, approximately 4.1 cm (1.6") long, held on blue-green scapes reaching 20–25 cm (8–10") in July.
  • Parentage: Both pod and pollen parents are H. 'Halcyon' — a self-pollinated seedling that distils the best of one of the world's most beloved blue hostas.
  • Hardiness: Zones 3–9; performs reliably across Canada's wide range of climates.

Grower's Tip: Hosta 'Kiwi Blue Baby' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9 — the glaucous bloom holds especially well in cooler, shadier spots like those found in Victoria's mild Pacific gardens. We've grown it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC and watched it maintain that intense blue-green colouring right through the season. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hosta 'Kiwi Blue Baby', verified before it leaves Bécancour.
