Hosta 'Silver Bullet' | Blue-Green, Compact, Slug-Resistant, Dense

Description

A Dense Vault of Frosted Cerulean Steel for the Shady Rockery

Hosta 'Silver Bullet' is a compact blue-green hosta bred by Hans Hansen, registered in 2020 from a cross between H. 'Love Pat' and H. 'Blue Mouse Ears'. It was selected for its exceptional leaf substance and the dense, overlapping mound it forms at maturity. Both leaf surfaces carry a heavy glaucous bloom that gives the foliage an intense, frosted blue-green hue that resists fading through the season. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9, tolerating the variable spring conditions found across most growing regions. Its compact scale and architectural density make it an ideal focal point for stone-edged borders, rockeries, and containers.

  • Exceptional leaf substance: Thick, rounded leaves with near-indestructible walls provide outstanding slug resistance and hold their form through the season.
  • Frosted blue-green colour: A heavy glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces delivers an intense, cool blue-green hue that holds well into summer.
  • Dense, layered mound: Leaves naturally overlap and stack, creating a tight, architectural specimen that works as a focal point in smaller spaces.
  • Slow, deliberate growth: Steady establishment rewards patience with an increasingly dense and sculptural mound year over year.
  • Near-white flowers: Pale, near-white blooms appear in midsummer on short scapes above the compact foliage mound.
Feature Specification
Size (H × W) 28 cm × 56 cm (11" × 22")
Hardiness Zone 3–9
Colour Intense blue-green with heavy silvery glaucous bloom
Light Requirements Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: The metallic tones of this cultivar contrast beautifully against dark mulch or stone edging — position it where its dense, frosted mound can be a clear focal point. Because of its slow growth rate, allow two to three seasons for the full stacked habit to develop. Every plant is verified True to Type at our trial fields in Bécancour, QC, where we confirm the thick-walled foliage and glaucous bloom are fully established before shipping.
