Our 'True to Type' Guarantee
The Gold Standard: Understanding Our True to Type Guarantee
At Hosta Choice Gardens, we believe a Canadian garden is only as good as the plants that call it home. Our home base is now in Bécancour, QC, but our journey with hostas spans the country. Our roots stretch back to Glenn's upbringing in the extreme seasons of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Yvon's childhood in Grand-Mère, Quebec. Glenn's horticultural path later took him to the high-plains environment of Brooks, Alberta, before we both moved to the lush, temperate landscapes of Vancouver and Victoria, BC. We eventually brought that expertise to Southwestern Ontario, spending years in Appin learning the Great Lakes conditions.
This lifetime of experience — spanning from the sub-zero winters of the Prairies to the salt air of the Pacific — means we aren't just sellers. We are experts in the Canadian climate. We understand exactly what your garden needs to thrive, no matter which province you call home.
What Does True to Type Mean?
Simply put, it is our promise that the hosta you order will be exactly what the hybridizer intended. Many large-scale retailers ship dormant bare roots in early spring. At that stage, a plant is just a brown crown — there is no way to verify if it has mutated, lost its variegation, or is suffering from health issues. We do things differently. We never ship a plant until we have personally seen it speak through its leaves.
Our Two-Stage Verification Process
1. The Spring Awakening (Spring Shipping Window)
Before any hosta is packaged for its journey to you, we wait for emergence in our fields and stock pots. We inspect the early-season traits — the initial spring colouring, the specific leaf taper, and the emergence of the first waxy blooms (epicuticular wax). Because traits like leaf texture and flower scapes change during the growing season, this first look ensures the plant is waking up with the vigour required to thrive in your specific micro-climate.
2. The Mid-Summer Audit (Late July Inspection)
Our most critical quality control happens in late July. During this window, we perform a farm-wide audit of our entire stock. By mid-summer, a hosta has reached its full seasonal expression. We verify the piecrust edges, the mature leaf rugosity, and the specific bloom traits. Any plant that doesn't meet the pinnacle of its cultivar's standards is pulled from our inventory. This ensures our stock remains True to Type year after year.
The Journey to Maturity: A Note on Patience
It is important for collectors to remember that the dimensions and descriptions in our catalogue represent a mature specimen. Much like a fine wine, a hosta matures season after season. In the hosta world, true maturity often takes 5 to 7 years. As your plant settles into your garden, you will notice its character evolve:
- Structural Shifts: Clumps that start low may transition into a stately vase shape.
- Textural Depth: Leaves often become more intensely rippled, corrugated, or crinkled as the plant ages.
- Variegation: Margins frequently widen and colours become more saturated over time.
We are here to help you along this journey. While we guarantee your plant is True to Type from day one, your patience will be rewarded as its full, majestic potential unfolds over the years.
White-Glove Shipping & Coordination
We treat your advance orders with the same care we give our mother plants. Each spring, we monitor the local forecast for every one of our delivery locations to find just the right shipping window — ensuring your plants don't face a late-season frost or extreme heat during transit. We also provide a personal phone call prior to shipping to confirm you are ready to accept your order.
