Plant Health & Hosta Virus X (HVX)

Why We Take Plant Health Seriously

At Hosta Choice Gardens, every plant we ship from our nursery in Bécancour, QC is sourced from reputable growers and goes through our True to Type verification process before it reaches your garden. We conduct regular disease testing as part of our standard practice — and when something doesn't meet our standards, we don't sell it.

We want to be straightforward with you: it is not possible for any nursery to individually test every single plant that enters or leaves their operation. What we can do — and what we are committed to doing — is sourcing carefully from trusted suppliers, testing regularly, staying informed about disease alerts in the industry, and making the call not to carry a variety when the risk is too great. Hosta 'Red Ninja' is exactly that kind of call.

What is Hosta Virus X (HVX)?

Hosta Virus X is a highly contagious, incurable disease specific to hostas. It has no cure, and infected plants must be removed and destroyed to protect the rest of your collection.

  • How it spreads: The virus travels through contaminated plant sap during routine tasks — dividing, pruning, or cutting back foliage. Tools like shears, spades, and even hands can transfer infected sap from one plant to another.
  • Why it's hard to detect: Infected plants can appear completely healthy for several seasons before showing symptoms such as mottling, leaf puckering, or stunted growth — meaning you may not know you have a problem until it has already spread.
  • Why soil matters: The virus can survive in leftover root debris in the soil long after an infected plant is removed, making it unsafe to replant hostas in that exact spot for an extended period.

The Hosta 'Red Ninja' Situation

When Hosta 'Red Ninja' was released in the US, it generated significant excitement — a hosta with truly red leaves would be a remarkable breakthrough for shade gardeners. However, following its release, the primary distributor confirmed that the stock tested positive for HVX and issued an official recall, pulling the plant from the market.

We have never ordered or received Hosta 'Red Ninja', and we will not do so in the future — even if suppliers claim that clean stock is available. The risk to your existing hosta collection is simply too great, and we are not willing to compromise the health of your garden.

Our Commitment to You

We source from reputable growers, test regularly, and follow disease alerts closely across the industry. When a variety raises serious concerns — as 'Red Ninja' has — we make the decision not to carry it, full stop. Your garden's long-term health will always come before a short-term trend.

Whether you are new to hostas or a seasoned collector, we are here to help you make informed choices. If you have questions about HVX, suspect an infected plant in your collection, or want guidance on safe garden practices, please contact us — we are happy to help.
