An Architectural Pinnacle of Carved Cerulean and Silver
Hosta 'Deep Waters' is a commanding, vase-shaped specimen bred by hybridizer Don Dean. Registered in 2014 from a complex lineage involving Hosta 'Sagae' and Hosta 'Sea Frolic', it inherits an upright stature ideal for underplanting with smaller perennials. Its heavily corrugated, carved-shell leaves are coated in a thick glaucous bloom on both sides. Hardy across Canadian zones 3–9, it performs reliably from the Maritimes to the Prairies. Use it as a bold focal point in the shade garden or as a structural anchor in mixed perennial borders.
-
Intense Sculptural Texture: The nearly round leaves are deeply cupped, folded, and intensely corrugated, creating a rugged, prehistoric look.
-
Deep Lapis Tones: Coated in a thick glaucous bloom on both sides, the foliage maintains a rich, silvery blue-green throughout the season.
-
Vase-Shaped Stature: Its very upright habit makes it a standout focal point, lifting the heavy, carved foliage well off the ground.
-
Impressive Veining: With 14 pairs of deeply impressed veins, each leaf looks like a work of art etched by hand.

Grower's Tip: Due to its upright habit and deep cupping, Hosta 'Deep Waters' benefits from regular watering at the base to keep its cups from drying out in high heat. At our Bécancour trial fields, we wait for the characteristic puckering and silver-blue wax to fully manifest before shipping, ensuring your plant is True to Type and ready to anchor your shade garden for years to come.
