
Why Heavy Dew Damages Hosta Leaves Late in the Season

Late summer dew is more damaging than it looks. Learn why heavy overnight moisture triggers fungal disease, foliar nematode spread, and cellular damage in hosta foliage — and what you should (and shouldn’t) be doing in your garden right now.
August is winding down. The air carries that first hint of autumn — cooler nights, heavy mist settling over the garden, and dew that lingers long past sunrise. For hosta growers from Victoria, BC to St. John's, NL, this seasonal shift is as reliable as it is beautiful.
But that heavy overnight dew? It's harder on your hostas than it looks.
Late in the growing season, aging foliage becomes increasingly vulnerable to the moisture that clings to it through the night. What begins as a glistening early morning garden can quietly set the stage for leaf damage that accelerates the decline of even your most prized cultivars. Understanding why this happens helps you act early — and protect the plants you've spent years growing.
Dew creates exactly the thin film of water that fungal spores need to germinate and penetrate the leaf cuticle. Two culprits are especially common in late-season Canadian gardens:
Both fungi overwinter in debris on the soil surface, ready to reinfect next spring. That's why fall sanitation matters as much as spring cleanup.
If foliar nematodes (Aphelenchoides fragariae) are present in your garden, heavy dew gives them exactly what they need to spread. These microscopic pests require a continuous film of water on the leaf surface to migrate out of the stomata and travel to adjacent foliage. Once inside, their feeding causes the characteristic sharp, brown, vein-delimited stripes that hosta growers dread — damage that stops abruptly at each leaf vein because the nematodes can't cross that barrier.
Dry conditions keep nematode populations largely contained. Wet ones let them roam.
On warm late-summer days, saturated soil keeps the root system actively pumping water upward. But when cool nights arrive, transpiration through the stomata slows dramatically — and that internal water pressure has nowhere to go. Leaf cells become over-engorged, their walls rupture, and the result is edema: small, water-soaked spots that dry into rusty-brown necrotic patches.
This is a purely physical stress — no pathogen required. It's your plant's plumbing working against itself.
Heavy dew that lingers into the morning on sun-exposed foliage creates a second problem: the dew droplets act as tiny magnifying lenses, focusing early sunlight onto already thin, late-season leaf tissue. On top of that, the rapid transition from cold overnight dew to warm morning sun causes localized thermal stress that accelerates tissue breakdown. Hostas in partial shade typically fare better simply because the sun hits them later — giving the dew more time to evaporate naturally.
If you grow blue or glaucous hostas, you've noticed they lose that powdery, silver-blue finish by mid-to-late summer. That's the epicuticular wax layer degrading naturally from heat, age, and environmental wear. This wax is what makes dew bead up and roll off a fresh spring leaf. By August, it's gone — and dew that would have rolled off in May now sits in direct contact with the leaf epidermis for hours, soaking directly into the tissue.
Blue hostas are particularly susceptible to late-season dew damage for exactly this reason.
You can't stop dew — but you can reduce how long it sits on your plants and limit the damage it causes. And a word of caution before you reach for the pruners: even if the foliage looks ragged right now, resist the urge to cut your hostas back completely. Those leaves are still working.
As long as hosta foliage remains green, it is actively photosynthesizing and storing energy down into the crown and roots — fuel the plant needs to build strong eyes and thrive next spring. Cutting everything back too early also risks triggering a fresh flush of tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first hard frost, leaving the crown vulnerable heading into winter.
The right time for a full cutback is after a couple of killing frosts — typically mid-to-late autumn depending on your zone. By then, the foliage will have turned yellow, collapsed naturally, and safely handed its energy stores underground. At that point, cut everything back to ground level and remove the debris from your beds to eliminate overwintering sites for fungal spores and nematode populations.
