Description

A Stately Gridiron Giant of Shovel-Shaped Blue

Hosta '1st and Ten' is a giant from the Gridiron Series by Doug and Mardy Beilstein. They registered it in 2011 as a seedling of the iconic Hosta 'Brutus'. This variety forms a bold, upright mound with massive blue-green leaves. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9 and thrives in partial to full shade.

Massive Shovel-Like Foliage: Huge, broadly ovate leaves feature a distinctive spoon shape and incredible substance, ensuring the plant remains a standout through the longest summer days.
Deeply Etched Veins: Rich blue-green leaves are characterised by dramatic, deep-set veins that add rugged architectural texture to the garden.
Commanding Upright Stature: Reaching 81 cm (32") in height, its very large upright habit allows it to rise above smaller perennials as an ideal back-of-border specimen.
Artistic Ruffling: Each leaf is finished with slightly rippled margins and a hint of light corrugation, providing a sense of constant, elegant motion.
Lavender Midsummer Blooms: Tall scapes carry soft lavender flowers in midsummer, adding a delicate floral accent above the bold blue-green canopy.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	81 cm × 127 cm (32" × 50")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Rich blue-green
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Give this giant ample space — it needs a full 127 cm (50") spread to reach its commanding potential, and it handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we monitor spring emergence to confirm the upright form, shovel-shaped leaves, and deep blue-green hue before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hosta '1st and Ten', verified before it leaves Bécancour.
