Hosta 'Ahhhs' | Blue to Blue-Green Large Hosta Rob Mortko Tiger's Eye Sport

Description

A Powdery Blue Giant That Earns Its Name Every Spring

Rob Mortko introduced Hosta 'Ahhhs' as a sport of H. 'Tiger's Eye', bringing a large-scale blue hosta with a seasonal colour journey that genuinely stops people in their tracks. Leaves emerge in a rich powdery blue in spring and ripen into a deep, elegant blue-green by midsummer, with moderate rippling that adds tactile depth without coarseness. Foliage is thick with good substance throughout the Canadian growing season. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Use it as a bold specimen or mass it for a sweeping blue-green texture in large shaded borders.

  • Seasonal Blue Journey: Emerges in a rich powdery blue in spring and transitions to a deep blue-green by midsummer — two distinct looks from a single plant across the season.
  • Moderate Leaf Ripple: A gentle ripple along the leaf margins adds depth and tactile interest, giving the foliage a refined, architectural quality without appearing rough.
  • Impressive Scale: Matures to 51 cm (20") tall and 91 cm (36") wide, making it an ideal choice for filling large gaps in shade borders or anchoring a woodland planting.
  • Pale Lavender Blooms: Gorgeous pale lavender flowers rise above the blue canopy in July, adding graceful vertical interest at the peak of the summer garden.
  • Tiger's Eye Heritage: As a sport of H. 'Tiger's Eye', 'Ahhhs' inherits strong vigour and reliable performance across the full range of Canadian hardiness zones.
Feature Specification
Size (H × W) 51 cm × 91 cm (20" × 36")
Hardiness Zone 3–9
Colour Powdery blue in spring; deep blue-green in summer
Light Requirements Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: To preserve the powdery blue as long as possible, place 'Ahhhs' in deep or dappled shade — excessive direct light can thin the waxy coating and shift the colour to green prematurely. It handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and we grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC where we wait for the spring blue to fully establish before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Rob Mortko selection, verified before it leaves Bécancour.
