Description

Imperial Scale and a Stunning Seasonal Colour Shift for the Shade Garden

Peter Ruh registered Hosta 'Allegan Emperor' in 2000 on behalf of Ken Herrema. It belongs to the celebrated Allegan series from Michigan, known for producing robust and reliable garden performers. This giant cultivar forms a colossal upright vase-shaped mound that anchors any shade border with authority. It emerges in spring with a cool powdery blue-green finish, then transitions to a deep, glossy dark green by midsummer. It is reliably hardy across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9 and suits large woodland borders, specimen plantings, and naturalized shade areas.

Leaf Shape and Texture: Broadly ovate and strongly upright with thick, leathery, rippled substance — exceptionally durable foliage that resists slug and snail damage and maintains its appearance through wind, rain, and the full Canadian growing season.
Leaf Colour: Emerges in a cool powdery blue-green in spring and transitions to a deep, lustrous dark green by late July — two distinct seasons of visual interest from a single plant.
Mature Size: 75–90 cm high × 150–180 cm wide (30–35 in × 59–71 in) — a colossal, graceful mound that towers over smaller perennials and fills large shaded spaces with commanding specimen presence.
Flowers: Tall 120 cm (47 in) scapes rise in midsummer carrying elegant striped lavender blooms that add a soft vertical accent high above the giant mound.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	75–90 cm × 150–180 cm (30–35" × 59–71")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Blue-green (spring) to glossy dark green (summer)
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Give 'Allegan Emperor' plenty of space at planting — it will claim 150–180 cm (59–71 in) of spread over three to five years, so plan for its eventual footprint from the start. It handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, making it a dependable giant across the country. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we wait for that distinctive spring-blue emergence to confirm the colour and substance are fully expressed before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hosta 'Allegan Emperor', verified before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
