Description

A Reptilian Masterpiece for the Shade Border

Hosta 'Alligator Rock' is a striking cultivar from prolific hybridizer Don Rawson, bred to bring intense tactile interest to the shady landscape. He named it for its extraordinary leaf texture, which mimics the rugged, scaly hide of an alligator. The thick, leathery leaves are densely covered in symmetrical rows of bumps and puckers that deepen with maturity. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9. Plant it as a bold structural specimen where texture and presence do the talking.

Leaf Shape and Texture: Thick, leathery leaves densely covered in symmetrical rows of bumps and puckers — one of the most rugged corrugated textures in the genus, intensifying with each season and providing elite natural resistance to slugs and snails.
Leaf Colour: Emerges with a soft blue-green glaucous bloom in spring, maturing to a rich, saturated deep green that holds all season — a subtle but rewarding seasonal colour shift on a bold, structural plant.
Mature Size: 35–45 cm high × 60 cm wide (14–18 in × 24 in) — a tidy, bold medium mound well-suited to border edges, specimen groupings, and container plantings.
Flowers: Elegant near-white flower spikes rise above the dark canopy in midsummer, providing a striking contrast against the deep green corrugated foliage.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	35–45 cm × 60 cm (14–18" × 24")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Deep green (blue-green glaucous in spring)
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Alligator Rock' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and the heavy corrugation becomes even more dramatic with each passing season. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we wait for the characteristic rows of bumps to clearly manifest on the emerging spring foliage before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hosta 'Alligator Rock', verified before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
