Hosta 'American Fashion' | Gold Centre Wide Green Margin Sport of Aoki Wade

Description

Tailored Elegance for the Canadian Shade Garden

Van Wade of Wade and Gatton Nursery introduced Hosta 'American Fashion' as a stabilized sport of the robust Hosta 'Aoki'. It forms a medium-sized mound with broadly ovate, heart-based leaves and notably thick, slightly glossy foliage. The centre opens chartreuse in spring, brightens to luminous golden yellow through summer, and mellows to a soft off-white by late season. A wide, deep green margin frames each leaf throughout, delivering bold contrast at every stage. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9.

  • Three-Stage Seasonal Colour Shift: Chartreuse in spring, golden yellow in summer, and soft off-white by late season — a living display that evolves all season long.
  • Extra-Wide Emerald Margins: The deep green border is broader than most variegated hostas, providing a bold, high-definition frame around the glowing centre.
  • Superior Leaf Substance: Inherits the heavy, durable foliage of the 'Aoki' lineage, offering excellent natural resistance to slug damage.
  • Sturdy Architectural Habit: Forms a dense, symmetrical mound 53 cm (21") tall and 99 cm (39") wide, anchoring borders with lasting structure.
  • Pale Lavender Flowers: Delicate blooms rise above the foliage in summer, adding a soft finishing touch to the bold foliar display.
Feature Specification

Hardiness Zone 3–9
Colour Chartreuse to gold to off-white centre, wide deep green margin

Grower's Tip: 'American Fashion' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and the three-stage colour shift is especially dramatic in gardens with dappled morning light. We grow every division at our nursery in Bécancour, QC, waiting for the full chartreuse-to-gold transition to confirm the signature wide-margin variegation before it leaves us. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hosta 'American Fashion' — Van Wade's original selection, verified before it leaves Bécancour.
