A Stately Union of Halcyon Blue Substance and Bright Yellow Margins
Alex Malloy of New York registered Hosta 'Anglo Saxon' in 2001 from a cross of H. 'Crepe Suzette' × H. 'Halcyon'. The bold, heart-shaped leaves carry a rich green centre framed by a vibrant yellow margin that softens to a light creamy-yellow as the season matures. Halcyon heritage gives the foliage excellent substance and a sturdy, reliable build that performs well across the full range of Canadian climates. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Use it as a structural bridge between larger specimen hostas and smaller border varieties in a shaded or partially sunny planting.
-
Unique Hybrid Pedigree: Combines the exceptional blue-green leaf substance of H. 'Halcyon' with the bright variegated flair of H. 'Crepe Suzette', producing a cultivar with both excellent texture and striking colour contrast.
-
Dynamic Yellow-to-Cream Margin: Bright yellow margins in spring gradually transition to a softer light creamy-yellow by midsummer, providing evolving season-long interest in the shade border.
-
Tall Lavender Flower Scapes: Delicate medium lavender flowers rise on sturdy 91 cm (36") scapes in midsummer, creating an elegant vertical accent well above the foliage canopy.
-
Dense Spreading Mound: Forms a reliable, spreading mound 40 cm (16") tall and 91 cm (36") wide, ideal for filling gaps in the mid-border or anchoring a mixed shade planting.
-
Proven Northern Vigour: This Malloy introduction is well-noted for excellent hardiness and adaptability across all Canadian hardiness zones from coast to coast.

Grower's Tip: Dappled morning sunlight helps the yellow margins on 'Anglo Saxon' reach their full brilliance before the afternoon heat — it handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9 and is a natural fit for the mixed shade borders of Kelowna, BC where warm summers and cool nights bring out the best in variegated hostas. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC and monitor the signature margin-to-centre definition before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Alex Malloy selection, confirmed before it leaves Bécancour.
