Description

A Sun-Tolerant Golden-Margined Giant for the Large Canadian Border

Mark Zilis registered Hosta 'Appalachian Beauty' in 2003 as a tissue culture sport of H. 'Abiqua Recluse'. The large, broadly ovate leaves carry a rich medium-green centre framed by wide, golden-yellow margins that persist with strong contrast throughout the growing season. Foliage is thick and heavily corrugated with prominent veining and a robust, upright form inherited from its Abiqua Recluse parentage. It grows vigorously across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9 and is notably sun tolerant for a large variegated hosta. Use it as an architectural focal point in a large perennial bed or as a bold anchor at the back of a shaded border.

Wide Persistent Golden-Yellow Margin: Rich golden-yellow margins frame the medium-green centre with strong contrast that holds throughout the Canadian growing season, intensifying with morning sun exposure rather than fading.
Superior Sun Tolerance: Unlike many variegated hostas that scorch in direct light, 'Appalachian Beauty' thrives with strong morning sun, which actually deepens the golden margin colour and enhances the overall contrast.
Heavily Corrugated Thick Texture: Thick, broadly ovate leaves with heavy corrugation and prominent veining add a rugged, tactile architectural dimension that holds its structure beautifully through wind and rain.
Large Architectural Scale: Reaches 60 cm (24") tall and 125 cm (50") wide, quickly filling significant garden space and serving as a commanding focal point in large perennial beds.
Near-White Summer Flowers: Tall scapes carry elegant near-white flowers in late June and July, adding a sophisticated vertical accent above the bold golden-margined canopy.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	60 cm × 125 cm (24" × 50")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Medium green centre with wide golden-yellow margin
Light Requirements	Partial shade; morning sun enhances golden margin colour

Grower's Tip: A location with strong morning light before the intense afternoon heat brings out the most vibrant golden contrast on 'Appalachian Beauty' — it handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9 and is a natural fit for the sunny-morning, shaded-afternoon gardens of the Eastern Townships of Québec where the light conditions are ideal for sun-tolerant variegated hostas. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC and wait for the first full flush of leaves to verify the width and clarity of those golden margins before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Mark Zilis selection, confirmed before it leaves Bécancour.
