Hosta 'Applause' with Stunning Upward Reaching Foliage

Description

A Standing Ovation for Sculpted, Upward-Reaching Foliage

Hosta 'Applause' is a truly distinctive masterpiece that commands attention through its unusual, "clapping" form. Originally discovered as a sport of the dark-foliaged 'Edge of Night' by Hans Hansen and registered in partnership with Tony Avent in 2006, this cultivar is a must-have for Canadian collectors who appreciate architectural drama. Its heavily corrugated, dark green leaves are framed by a wide, creamy-white border, but the real showstopper is the way the foliage turns upward rather than laying flat, resembling hands joined in applause. This large, robust clump provides a rhythmic movement and a lively presence that can transform a static woodland garden into a dynamic landscape.

Why It Stands Out

  • Signature "Hands Clapping" Shape: The unique, upward-cupped foliage creates a striking vertical silhouette that is rare among variegated hostas.
  • Bold High-Contrast Margins: Wide, creamy-white borders pop against the deep, dark green centres, remaining vibrant throughout the Canadian growing season.
  • Heavily Corrugated Texture: The thick, puckered leaf substance not only adds visual depth but also provides excellent resistance against common garden pests.
  • Impressive Large Stature: At maturity, it forms a massive mound that can span over four feet wide, making it a perfect anchor for large-scale shade borders.

Grower's Tip

To fully appreciate the unique "upward" habit of Hosta 'Applause', give it plenty of room to reach its full 140 cm spread without being crowded by neighbouring plants. At our nursery in Bécancour, we monitor these clumps through their emergence to ensure that the distinctive "clapping" curl and wide margins are perfectly defined. This True to Type verification process is our guarantee that you are receiving the authentic Hansen/Avent specimen with its signature architectural flair.
