Description

A High-Gloss Transition of Radiant Yellow and Soft Ivory

Hosta 'Apple Candy' is a striking medium-sized cultivar that brings a glowing, multidimensional quality to the Canadian shade garden. An eye-catching sport of the popular Hosta 'June Fever' by Jan van den Top, this variety is prized for its thick, high-gloss foliage and its remarkable ability to shift colours as the season progresses. In the spring, the leaves emerge with a soft, muted green centre framed by a bright, electric yellow margin. As the summer heat arrives, the centres lighten significantly while the margins fade to a clean, sophisticated white, creating a "candy-coated" effect that brightens up even the deepest garden shadows. Its sturdy, wax-like substance makes it a durable performer from the temperate gardens of the West Coast to the rugged, cold-hardy zones of the Prairies.

Why It Stands Out

Dynamic Colour Evolution: The foliage undergoes a beautiful transformation, shifting from spring's yellow-on-green to a high-contrast white-on-yellow by mid-summer.
Glossy, Heavy Substance: The leaves possess a thick, shiny texture that not only looks professional but also offers natural resistance to garden pests.
Exceptional Slug Resistance: Thanks to its heavy leaf substance, it is notably less prone to slug damage than thinner-leaved varieties.
Summer Floral Interest: In late July, the clump is topped with delicate lavender flowers on attractive, purple-tinted scapes.

Technical Specs

Feature	Details
Size	30–40 cm Height / 75–90 cm Spread (12–15" H / 30–35" W)
Hardiness Zone	Standard Canadian Zones 3–9
Colour	Muted green to yellow centres with yellow to white margins
Light Requirements	Partial Sun to Shade; some sun helps develop the brightest colours

Grower's Tip

To get the most "glow" out of Hosta 'Apple Candy', try planting it in a spot that receives some filtered morning sun; we've found that moderate shade can sometimes cause the centres to remain a darker green, softening the dramatic contrast. Because the colour of this cultivar is so tied to its seasonal maturity, we observe every plant in our Bécancour fields to ensure the variegation is established and healthy before shipping. This True to Type verification means you aren't just getting a root — you're getting a verified, living plant that is ready to perform in your landscape immediately.
