Description

A Zesty Slice of Heavily Rippled Golden Radiance

Hosta 'Apple Pie' is a mouth-watering addition to any Canadian shade collection, bringing a vibrant splash of "Granny Smith" green that matures into a warm, delicious gold. Registered by the legendary Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in 2002, this hybrid is a cross between Hosta 'Green Piecrust' and Hosta 'August Moon'. It perfectly blends the best traits of its parents: the iconic, deeply ruffled "piecrust" edges and a robust, sun-tolerant constitution. Whether you are gardening in the humid valleys of Southern Ontario or the breezy Atlantic provinces, this medium-to-large cultivar creates a shimmering focal point that reflects light beautifully under a woodland canopy.

Why It Stands Out

Deeply Rippled Margins: The edges of each leaf are heavily wavy and "crimped," providing a sophisticated tactile texture that adds movement to the garden.
Brilliant Colour Transition: Emerging as a bright chartreuse, the foliage develops into a rich, glowing gold as the season progresses, especially when touched by morning sun.
Substantial Leaf Substance: The thick, heart-shaped leaves offer excellent durability and a natural resistance to garden pests compared to thinner-leaved varieties.
Vigorous Mounding Habit: This cultivar establishes quickly, forming a dense, architectural clump that smothers weeds and fills gaps with ease.

Technical Specs

Feature	Details
Size	50 cm Height / 115 cm Spread (20" H / 45" W)
Hardiness Zone	Standard Canadian Zones 3–8
Colour	Chartreuse emerging to bright golden-yellow
Light Requirements	Partial Shade; Sun Tolerant (colours best with some morning sun)

Grower's Tip

To achieve that perfect "golden crust" look, we recommend planting Hosta 'Apple Pie' in a location that receives a few hours of morning sunlight; too much deep shade will keep it in its chartreuse phase. Because the signature ruffling is a key trait of this Avent introduction, we monitor our stocks in Bécancour to ensure the piecrust edges are properly formed before shipping. This True to Type verification is our promise that your plant will arrive with its distinct personality fully intact and ready to thrive in our rugged Canadian climate.

Please Note: This is a different 'Apple Pie' cultivar than the 'Apple Pie' cultivar from Eric Smith. Please check Plant Delights Nursery for more information on this cultivar from Tony Avent.
