Description

A Corrugated Treasure of Intense Metallic Gold

Hosta 'Aspen Gold' is a classic and indispensable masterpiece for any Canadian shade garden. Registered by the legendary Vivian Grapes in 1986, this medium-to-large cultivar is a select seedling of the iconic Hosta 'Tokudama'. It is celebrated for its heavy, near-circular leaves that possess a deep, intense gold colour and a thick, leathery texture. What truly sets this variety apart is its extreme rugosity—the leaves are profoundly cupped and "puckered," creating a metallic, golden sheen that captures the sunlight in a way few other plants can. From the cool mornings of the Maritimes to the long summer days of the Prairies, 'Aspen Gold' stands as a glowing, slow-growing beacon of quality and durability.

Why It Stands Out

Intense "Puckered" Texture: The deeply corrugated and cupped foliage provides a rugged, tactile interest that adds a professional-grade depth to your garden design.
Slug-Resistant Substance: Thanks to its thick, waxy Tokudama heritage, this hosta is naturally resistant to pests, maintaining its pristine golden glow all season long.
Luminous Colour Transition: Emerging in a bright chartreuse, the leaves quickly mature into a rich, metallic gold that thrives even in deeper shade.
Elegant White Blooms: In early-to-mid summer, the golden mound is topped with dense clusters of near-white, bell-shaped flowers that contrast beautifully with the warm foliage.

Technical Specs

Feature	Details
Size	40–55 cm Height / 110–120 cm Spread
Hardiness Zone	Standard Canadian Zones 3–8
Colour	Intense Golden-Yellow
Light Requirements	Partial Shade; can tolerate significant sun with adequate moisture

Grower's Tip
To achieve the deepest cupping and most intense golden hue, we recommend planting Hosta 'Aspen Gold' in a spot that receives bright, filtered morning light. Because this variety is known for its slower growth rate and high-substance leaves, we take extra care in Bécancour to ensure every division has an established root system and the signature "puckered" texture. This True to Type verification is our promise that the specimen you receive is a healthy, verified Vivian Grapes original, ready to brighten your landscape for years to come.
