Hosta 'August Moon' A Classic Shade Garden Beacon with Heart-Shaped Gold Leaves

Description

A Timeless Radiant Beacon of Heart-Shaped Gold

Hosta 'August Moon' is a legendary cornerstone of the shade garden, revered for its ability to transform a dim corner into a glowing pool of light. Registered by the American Hosta Society in 1987 (revised in 1996), this large-scale classic is one of the most reliable and beloved golden cultivars in the Canadian landscape. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves emerge in a fresh, spring chartreuse before intensifying into a rich, luminous gold that holds its brilliance throughout the entire growing season. From the sun-drenched gardens of the Okanagan to the cool, misty borders of the Maritimes, 'August Moon' provides a dependable, fast-growing architecture that anchors a perennial bed with ease.

Why It Stands Out

  • Superior Sun Tolerance: Unlike many yellow hostas that can scorch, this variety thrives with a generous amount of morning sun, which actually helps develop its deepest golden hues.
  • Heavily Corrugated Texture: As the plant matures, the leaves develop a wonderful "puckered" or seersucker texture that adds a sophisticated tactile depth to your garden design.
  • Vigorous Growth Habit: This cultivar is a reliable workhorse, quickly forming a dense, symmetrical mound that effectively suppresses weeds and fills large gaps.
  • Elegant Late-Summer Blooms: In August, the golden foliage is topped with sturdy scapes bearing bell-shaped, pale lavender flowers that attract pollinators.
