Hosta 'Autumn Frost' | Blue-Green Centre Wide Yellow White Margin Proven Winners® Shadowland®

Description

A Frosty Halo of Yellow and Blue in the Shade Garden

Proven Winners® Shadowland® introduced Hosta 'Autumn Frost' as a sport of H. 'First Frost' from Walters Gardens. The heart-shaped leaves have a rich blue-green centre with a heavy waxy bloom and an extra-wide margin that emerges brilliant yellow in spring before maturing to clean parchment white. Foliage is remarkably thick and leathery with excellent slug resistance. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Use it as a high-contrast focal point in a shaded border or as a striking container specimen on a shaded deck.

  • Extra-Wide Luminous Margin: The thick yellow-to-white border occupies a significant portion of each leaf, illuminating even the deepest shade and providing two distinct looks in one season.
  • Frosty Blue-Green Centre: A heavy waxy bloom in the leaf centre provides a cool, glaucous contrast to the bright margin, holding its definition from spring through autumn.
  • Elite Leaf Substance: Remarkably thick, leathery foliage provides superior durability and excellent natural resistance to slugs and snails.
  • Tidy Mounding Habit: Forms a dense, symmetrical clump 51 cm (20") tall and 71 cm (28") wide that holds its shape beautifully throughout the season.
  • Pale Lavender Blooms: Elegant bell-shaped pale lavender flowers rise neatly above the high-contrast canopy in midsummer.
Feature Specification
Size (H × W) 51 cm × 71 cm (20" × 28")
Hardiness Zone 3–9
Colour Blue-green centre with wide yellow to white margin
Light Requirements Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: To maintain the frosty blue-green centre and achieve the brightest white margins, choose a spot with dappled morning light and avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can thin the waxy coating. 'Autumn Frost' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and its thick, slug-resistant leaves make it a natural fit for the lush, rain-soaked gardens of Vancouver’s North Shore where slugs are practically a local institution. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC and verify the signature wide margin and heavy leaf texture before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Proven Winners® Shadowland® 'Autumn Frost', confirmed before it leaves Bécancour.
