Description

A Broad Pillar of Deep Cerulean Strength

Hosta 'Big B' is an imposing, upright specimen that brings a structural elegance to any Canadian garden, from the Pacific coast to the rocky shores of Newfoundland. Originating from the skilled hybridizing work of Charles Kwick, this large-scale variety is prized for its nearly round, dark-green-to-blue leaves that exhibit a distinct downward fold, creating a unique domed effect. Its foliage is notably thick and heavily corrugated — a hallmark of its durability and natural resistance to garden pests. At our nursery in Bécancour, we monitor the spring emergence with great care to ensure that every leaf displays the characteristic puckering and waxy lustre that makes this plant a True to Type standout before it ever leaves our facility.

Exceptional Surface Texture: Heavily corrugated and puckered leaves provide a rich tactile quality that catches the shifting light.
Upright Architectural Habit: The vase-like growth pattern makes it a perfect focal point or a statuesque anchor for a woodland border.
Substantial Leaf Weight: Thick foliage ensures the plant maintains its vigour and pristine appearance throughout our long summer days.
Vibrant Floral Display: Sends up tall scapes topped with pale lavender flowers in mid-summer, providing a soft contrast to the dark, moody foliage.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	61 cm × 76 cm (24" × 30")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Dark blue-green to cobalt
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Because of its upward-reaching habit, Hosta 'Big B' is an excellent candidate for underplanting with shorter, spreading perennials — its high canopy leaves plenty of room for delicate groundcovers to thrive beneath. To ensure your new addition has the best possible start, we never ship dormant roots. Instead, we wait for the first flush of growth in the Bécancour climate to verify that the plant is healthy, vigorous, and True to Type so you can plant with absolute confidence.
