Description

Bold blue texture for a quiet shade corner

Hosta 'Big Daddy' brings broad blue-green leaves and deep corrugation to the shade garden. F. Shaw originated this sport of a variegated form of Hosta 'Elegans'. Its original registration dates to 1978; the 2016 amendment correctly identifies F. Shaw as originator. A waxy bloom coats both leaf surfaces, while gentle cupping adds depth to the foliage. By late summer, the leaves turn green, giving this substantial shade-garden anchor a softer seasonal finish.

Sculpted foliage: Broad, heart-based leaves combine deep puckering with light cupping, creating texture worth enjoying up close.
Room to make an impression: Give this large hosta space beside a shaded path, where its sweeping foliage can set the scene.
A changing palette: Enjoy the intensely blue-green early foliage, then let its late-summer green tones blend into the surrounding planting.
Summer flowers: Near-white blooms rise above the textured leaves, adding a gentle contrast to the bold foliage.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	63.5 × 167.6 cm (25 × 66 in)
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Intensely blue-green foliage turning green by late summer; near-white flowers
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Choose a shaded spot with room for the clump to spread, and water the soil rather than repeatedly wetting the leaves. Big Daddy handles Canadian winters in Zones 3–9, returning with its bold foliage each spring. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Big Daddy' cultivar.
