Hosta 'Birchwood Ruffled Queen' | Gilded Crown of Ruffled Elegance

Description

A Gilded Crown of Ruffled Elegance

Hosta ‘Birchwood Ruffled Queen’ is a regal presence that brings a sense of sophisticated movement to the Canadian shade garden. Registered in 1986 by the American Hosta Society and originating from the storied breeding of Florence Shaw, this descendant of ‘Green Piecrust’ is beloved for its expansive, heart-shaped foliage. These large leaves begin the spring in a striking golden yellow before transitioning toward a rich dark green as the season matures — a fascinating viridescent quality that keeps the landscape evolving. Whether nestled in a woodland corner in British Columbia or anchoring a border in the Maritimes, this sun-tolerant beauty is a reliable performer. At our nursery in Bécancour, we watch for that signature piecrust edge to develop each spring, ensuring every Hosta ‘Birchwood Ruffled Queen’ is True to Type before it is carefully packaged for its new home.

Why It Stands Out

  • Dramatic Piecrust Margins: The deeply ruffled edges of the leaves create a sense of texture and flow that mimics a gentle summer breeze.
  • Impressive Garden Footprint: With a massive spread reaching up to 150 cm (60"), it quickly fills large spaces and overlaps beautifully when mass-planted.
  • Sun-Tolerant Versatility: This variety handles up to three-quarters sun, making it a flexible choice for spots where other hostas might struggle.
  • Stately Floral Scapes: In mid-summer, tall 115 cm (45") scapes arise, topped with delicate lavender blooms that provide a vertical counterpoint to the broad, ruffled foliage.

Grower’s Tip

While Hosta ‘Birchwood Ruffled Queen’ is remarkably sun tolerant, providing a bit of afternoon relief will help maintain its golden hue longer before it shifts to its deeper green summer coat. We believe that seeing is believing, which is why we never ship dormant eyes. We wait for the emergence in Bécancour to confirm that the health and rippled leaf margins are True to Type, giving your garden a queen that is ready to rule from day one.
