Description

A Sleek European Import with Collector’s Heritage

Hosta ‘Black Light’ is a sophisticated introduction from Belgian breeder Danny Van Eechaute, offering a moody, high-contrast look for the contemporary Canadian shade border. A refined cross between Hosta ‘Dewed Steel’ and Hosta ‘Devon Green’, this variety is celebrated for its deep purple petioles — so dark they appear nearly black — which extend their pigment into the base of each ovate leaf. Our current inventory is particularly special, as these plants are direct divisions from the original Originator’s stock plant we acquired for our Bécancour collection. At our nursery, we wait for the first flush of spring growth to confirm that those signature dark stems and slightly shiny leaf surfaces are True to Type before your plant is cleared for its journey.

Why It Stands Out

Direct Originator Heritage: These specimens are authentic divisions from our primary stock plant, ensuring the highest genetic integrity.
Stunning Dark Petioles: Features near-black purple stems that provide a dramatic vertical contrast to the greenery.
Lustrous Leaf Texture: The ovate, forest-green foliage boasts a slightly shiny top surface that reflects dappled sunlight beautifully.
Speckled Scape Interest: The flower scapes emerge in mid-summer with unique purple speckling, adding an extra layer of botanical detail.

Technical Specs

Feature	Details
Size	41 cm (16") High × 76 cm (30") Wide
Hardiness Zone	Canadian Zones 3–9
Colour	Dark Green with Purple Petioles
Light Requirements	Partial to Full Shade

Grower’s Tip

To best showcase the dark petioles of Hosta ‘Black Light’, consider planting it in a slightly elevated position or a decorative urn where the near-black stems can be viewed at eye level. We avoid shipping dormant roots to ensure your success; instead, we monitor the emergence in our Bécancour beds to verify that the plant’s health and distinctive stem colouring are True to Type, so you can enjoy its dark elegance the moment it arrives.
