Description

A Rare Sapphire Relic for the Dedicated Collector

If you're searching for a rare blue hosta for sale in Canada, Hosta 'Blue Jewel' is a hidden gem worth the hunt. Shrouded in the mystery of an unknown parentage, this collector's hosta comes from the legendary breeding program of Herb and Dorothy Benedict — making it one of the most sought-after Benedict hosta cultivars in the shade gardening world. Seldom seen in the commercial trade, it is a true tour de force for the serious Canadian collector. With its deeply veined, corrugated blue hosta foliage and a low-slung, wide-reaching habit, it brings a sense of quiet authority to the shade garden — performing beautifully from the rocky soils of the Canadian Shield to the rich loams of the Saint Lawrence Valley.

Persistent Powder-Blue Bloom: While many varieties lose their lustre, this "jewel" is prized for its ability to maintain its rich, matte cerulean coating deep into the autumn — a true late-season blue hosta standout.
Heavy Architectural Substance: The thick, ovate leaves are built to withstand the elements, featuring a flat base and a gentle wave that adds a sense of movement to the clump.
Deeply Etched Detail: With up to 11 prominent vein pairs, the large blue hosta corrugated leaves have a tactile quality that catches the morning dew and soft, filtered light.
Lavender Summer Accents: In the height of summer, 45 cm blue-green scapes emerge to host pale lavender, striped flowers — adding a delicate vertical contrast to the wide, blue-green mound.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	30 cm × 90 cm (12" × 35")
Hardiness Zone	Canadian Zones 3–9
Colour	Intense powder blue-green
Light Requirements	Partial to Full Shade

Grower's Tip: Because this is one of the more elusive Benedict blues, it deserves a standout position where its late-season colour can be fully appreciated. To ensure we are preserving the integrity of this rare shade perennial, we wait for those deep veins and heavy leaf substance to fully manifest in our Bécancour trial gardens, shipping only once the plant is verified as True to Type.
