Description

A Gilded Giant of Monumental Substance

Discovered as a spectacular sport of the world-famous Hosta 'Sum and Substance', Hosta 'Bottom Line' takes that legendary lineage and adds a touch of high-contrast drama. Introduced by Winterberry Gardens (Jim Anderson), this massive cultivar is a hallmark of architectural garden design. It is perfectly suited for the expansive landscapes of the Canadian Prairies or as a glowing focal point in a lush Quebec woodland, offering a sophisticated twist on one of the most successful hosta parents in history.

Why It Stands Out

Massive Gilded Contrast: The enormous, heavy-substance leaves feature a rich, deep green centre framed by an exceptionally wide, vibrant yellow-to-gold margin.
Sturdy Vase-Like Architecture: Large, ovate leaves are held on thick, vertical petioles, creating a grand silhouette that rises 71 cm high and commands attention from across the garden.
Exceptional Leaf Substance: Inheriting the heavy-substance quality of its parentage, this variety offers outstanding slug resistance, maintaining its glossy, pristine appearance throughout our long summer days.
Stately Summer Blooms: In midsummer, tall, strong scapes emerge to display pale lavender flowers, adding a vertical elegance to the plant's impressive 170 cm spread.

Technical Specs

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	71.1 cm × 170.2 cm (28″ × 67″)
Hardiness Zone	Canadian Zones 3–9
Colour	Green with wide yellow-to-gold margins
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip

Because this is a sport of 'Sum and Substance', it can handle slightly more morning sun than most — which actually helps intensify that golden border. We take our True to Type commitment seriously; we monitor these titans in our Bécancour trial fields to verify that the specific marginal variegation is stable and vibrant before they are prepared for their journey to your garden.
