Bob Solberg's Refined Halcyon × Riptide Cross With Glaucous Bloom on Both Leaf Surfaces

Bob Solberg of Chapel Hill, North Carolina registered Hosta 'Carolina Blue' in 2000 from a cross of H. 'Halcyon' and H. 'Riptide'. Broadly ovate leaves with a rounded base reach 17.8 cm (7") long × 14 cm (5.5") wide with 8 to 9 vein pairs, presenting blue-green flat margins with a glaucous bloom on both the upper and lower surfaces. Blue scapes rise 71.1–81.3 cm (28–32") tall, carrying pale lavender tubular flowers well above the mound. It forms a tidy mound 40.6 cm (16") tall and 76.2 cm (30") wide at a moderate growth rate. Canadian gardeners from Zone 3 through 9 will find it a refined and reliable blue shade specimen.
