Description

A Sun-Drenched Mosaic of Puckered Golden Geometry

Hailing from the brilliant hybridising program of Doug and Mardy Beilstein, Hosta 'Checkered Cab' is a high-octane standout that brings a burst of energy to the shade garden. Registered in 2013, this mid-sized marvel is a pinnacle of texture, forming a low, wide-spreading mound that looks as though it were fashioned from hammered gold. It is a rugged performer across the Canadian landscape, perfectly suited for the intense seasonal shifts from the wind-swept Prairies to the humid gardens of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Deeply Checkered Texture: The leaves are intensely corrugated and puckered, creating a unique, quilted surface that mimics a mosaic pattern in the light.
Brilliant Golden Glow: Emerging in a vibrant chartreuse, the foliage brightens to a luminous gold, acting as a natural spotlight in darker corners of the yard.
Exceptional Substance: The thick, heavy leaves offer superb resistance to slugs and maintain their integrity through the summer heat.
Expansive Groundcover: With a height of 38 cm (15") but a massive 107 cm (42") reach, it creates a dense, architectural skirt around larger blue or green specimens.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	38 cm × 107 cm (15" × 42")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Bright chartreuse to vibrant gold
Light Requirements	Partial shade to dappled sun

Grower's Tip: To get the most intense gold from your 'Checkered Cab', give it a few hours of morning sun — this variety handles light better than many yellow hostas. Because the specific, intense puckering and golden hue are what define this cultivar, we never ship sight-unseen. We wait for the spring emergence right here in Bécancour to monitor the development of the rugose texture, ensuring your plant is True to Type and ready to shine before it leaves our care.
