Description

Vivid Crimson Stems in an Upright Vase of Lustrous Green

Jim Herold registered Hosta 'Chopsticks' in 2009 as a standout cultivar for shade gardens. He selected it from open-pollinated seedlings to highlight its most striking feature: vivid red petioles. The lance-shaped, medium green leaves carry a smooth, satiny sheen that shimmers in dappled light. Hardy from zones 3 to 9, it thrives in Canadian shade gardens from coast to coast. Its upright, vase-shaped habit makes it ideal for borders, containers, and contemporary garden designs.

Vivid Red Petioles: The long, slender stems are saturated with deep burgundy-to-crimson tones that extend well up into the base of each leaf.
Lustrous Leaf Finish: Each lance-shaped, medium green leaf has a smooth, satiny sheen that captures light and creates a shimmering effect in partial shade.
Upright Vase Habit: Unlike low-mounding types, this variety grows in an open, upright form that showcases those colourful chopstick stems to full effect.
Elegant Floral Display: In mid-to-late summer, sturdy scapes carry delicate lavender tubular flowers that complement the refined character of the foliage below.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	38 cm × 81 cm (15" × 32")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Medium green with vivid red petioles
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Plant Hosta 'Chopsticks' in a slightly elevated position or a decorative container so those crimson stems are at eye level. We monitor petiole colour and upright form at our Bécancour trial fields each spring to ensure every plant is True to Type before it ships.
