Description

An Elegant Cascade of Frosted Ivory and Emerald

A spectacular 2012 registration from Walters Gardens, Inc., Hosta 'Cool as a Cucumber' is a huge sport of Hosta 'Cascades' that creates a massive, sweeping mound bringing serene movement to the Canadian landscape. Its long, lance-shaped leaves and crisp creamy-white-and-green variegation offer a cooling presence that persists through the most humid summer afternoons, whether brightening a deep shade pocket in a Vancouver woodland or anchoring a large border in a suburban Quebec garden.

Massive Architectural Presence: Reaching a spread of 122 cm (48"), this variety forms a grand, cascading silhouette that commands attention in large-scale borders and woodland gardens.
Stunning Lanceolate Foliage: Leaves up to 36 cm (14") long feature clear creamy-white centres with medium green margins, creating a clean and sophisticated contrast.
Lustrous Finish: A slightly shiny texture on both leaf surfaces catches dappled light to create a shimmering, luminous effect throughout the season.
Ethereal Floral Display: In midsummer, tall scapes rising to 102 cm (40") carry near-white tubular flowers that perfectly complement the variegation below.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	81 cm × 122 cm (32" × 48")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Creamy-white centre with medium green margins
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Because Hosta 'Cool as a Cucumber' carries significant white variegation, it performs best in a spot protected from harsh afternoon sun to prevent the delicate centres from scorching. We treat this giant with the utmost care at our Bécancour, QC trial fields — waiting for spring emergence to visually verify the vigorous growth and stability of the ivory-and-emerald pattern, ensuring every plant is True to Type before it begins its journey to you.
