A Stellar Frontier of Deep Emerald and Creamy Light
Hosta 'Deep Space Nine' is a chimeral reversal of Hosta 'Captain Kirk', bred by Mark Zilis and registered in 2010. It is known for stable, high-contrast leaves with wide creamy yellow margins around deep green centres. The thick, ovate foliage resists slugs and holds its shape well through the season. It grows reliably across Canada in zones 3–9, from Ontario to the Prairies. Plant it as a bold specimen or anchor in any shaded Canadian garden.
-
Bold Marginal Variegation: Wide creamy yellow borders of approximately 2.5 cm (1") frame the dark green centres, creating a high-contrast display all season.
-
Substantial Leaf Substance: Heavy foliage provides excellent slug resistance and maintains a neat, dull finish on the top surface.
-
Luminous Undersides: A silvery glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides adds a hidden layer of sophistication when ruffled by a breeze.
-
Strong Vertical Interest: Tall green scapes carry pale lavender flowers well above the foliage in mid-summer, attracting hummingbirds and pollinators.

Grower's Tip: While Hosta 'Deep Space Nine' is a vigorous grower, its wide margins are most vibrant with a bit of morning sun. At our Bécancour trial fields, we confirm every plant is True to Type before it ships — so the margin width and colour are exactly as Mark Zilis intended.
