Description

A Fast-Growing Burst of Sunshine with a Brilliant Green Frame

Hosta 'Lakeside Banana Bay' is a compact, fast-growing cultivar from hybridizer Mary Chastain, registered in 2005 as a sport of H. 'Lakeside Meter Maid'. Chastain selected it for its vivid yellow centre — a warm, luminous tone that intensifies as the season progresses — framed by a bright green flat margin approximately 2.5 cm (1") wide. The nearly round, lightly folded leaves are very shiny on top, giving the compact mound a polished, reflective quality that catches light beautifully in the shade border. Near-white tubular flowers arrive on short green scapes in early July. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9.

Seasonal Colour Shift: Yellow centre intensifies through the season — starting warm and brightening to a deeper, more saturated gold by midsummer.
Margin: Bright green flat margin approximately 2.5 cm (1") wide — a crisp, vivid frame that sharpens the contrast with the glowing yellow centre.
Leaf Surface: Very shiny on top, slightly shiny underneath — a polished, reflective quality that adds luminosity and catches light in dappled shade.
Leaf Form: Nearly round with a cordate base and lightly folded — a compact, tidy form with 8 vein pairs and a clean, rounded silhouette.
Growth Rate: Fast — fills a container or border spot quickly, making it one of the most rewarding compact hostas to establish.
Flowers: Near-white tubular blooms on green scapes 28–33 cm (11–13") tall in early July.
Size: 23 cm (9") tall × 56 cm (22") wide — a compact, tidy mound ideal for containers, troughs, and front-of-border placements.
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliably cold-hardy across Canada.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	23 cm × 56 cm (9" × 22")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Yellow centre, bright green margin; yellow intensifies
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Lakeside Banana Bay' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and its fast growth rate means it fills a container or trough quickly — a compact hosta that delivers outsized impact for its size. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we verify the signature shiny yellow centre and bright green margin before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Mary Chastain selection, not a generic yellow sport.
