Description

Bold Gold Margins on a Commanding Upright Giant

J. Machen, Jr. registered Hosta 'Liberty' in 2000 as a sport of the legendary H. 'Sagae'. It emerged from Machen's clump in Mobjack, Virginia, inheriting Sagae's dramatic upright habit. The leaves are medium blue-green with a wide 6.4 cm (2.5") golden yellow margin that brightens through summer. It earned the AHGA Hosta of the Year award in 2012, confirming its place among the great garden hostas. Canadian gardeners from Zone 3 through 9 rely on it as a bold anchor for shaded borders.

Leaf: 32 cm (12.6") long × 24.9 cm (9.8") wide with 12 vein pairs; medium blue-green centre with a wide 6.4 cm (2.5") golden yellow flat margin; glaucous bloom on both surfaces; rounded base.
Plant size: Matures to 66 cm (26") high × 160 cm (63") wide with an upright, semi-arching clump habit and moderate growth rate.
Flowers: Pale lavender tubular blooms on 81–89 cm (32–35") green scapes from July through August — a graceful complement to the bold foliage.
Provenance: Sport of H. 'Sagae'; patented PP12,531 / PBR13145 QZ. AHGA Hosta of the Year 2012.
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — dependable from the mildest coastal gardens to the coldest prairie winters.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	66 cm × 160 cm (26" × 63")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Blue-green with wide golden yellow margin
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Hosta 'Liberty' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9 — we have seen it perform beautifully in Winnipeg, MB gardens where prairie cold tests even the hardiest perennials. Every plant is verified at our nursery in Bécancour, QC before it ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Liberty', confirmed before it leaves Bécancour.
