Description

The Shinier, Bolder Sibling of Frances Williams

Hosta 'Maple Leaf' is a medium-to-large classic from hybridizer Eldren Minks, registered in 1972 as a sport of the legendary H. 'Frances Williams'. Minks selected it for its noticeably shinier leaf surface — a refinement that gives the heavy corrugation and deep cupping of that celebrated parent an added luminosity in the shade border. The thick, round leaves carry 16 vein pairs and a wide chartreuse edge that frames the green centre with warm, glowing definition. Near-white flowers arrive on tall 75 cm (30") scapes from June through July. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9.

Leaf Surface: Noticeably shinier than H. 'Frances Williams' — the corrugated surface catches and reflects light in the shade border, adding luminosity to the bold texture.
Corrugation: Very corrugated, thick, round, and deeply cupped — one of the most heavily substanced medium-to-large hostas in the classic catalogue.
Colour: Green centre with a wide chartreuse edge — a warm, glowing margin that brightens the shade border and holds its colour through the season.
Vein Pairs: 16 vein pairs — exceptional leaf detail that adds depth and visual interest to the already heavily textured surface.
Flowers: Near-white blooms on tall scapes 75 cm (30") high from June through July — a clean, elegant floral display above the bold foliage.
Size: 61 cm (24") tall × 91 cm (36") wide — a commanding medium-to-large mound with strong architectural presence.
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliably cold-hardy across Canada.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	61 cm × 91 cm (24" × 36")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Green centre, chartreuse edge
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Maple Leaf' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and its thick, heavily corrugated leaves become more impressive with each passing season as the clump matures — a hosta that rewards patience and a well-chosen site. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we verify the signature shiny corrugated surface and chartreuse edge before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Eldren Minks selection — the genuine Frances Williams sport with that distinctive added sheen.
