Description

A One-of-a-Kind Frost That Settles on Every Leaf

Chuck and Sue Andersen of Mason Hollow Nursery introduced Hosta 'Vermont Frost' as a sport of H. 'Ghost Spirit'. It is not formally registered but was first offered at auction to mark the Fifth Anniversary of First Look. Leaves emerge white in spring and quickly begin to speckle, eventually maturing to blue with white specks — a colour journey unlike any other small hosta. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Plant it where close observation is possible, as the seasonal transformation is the real show.

Remarkable Colour Journey: Leaves emerge white, speckle up as they age, and finally settle into blue with white misting — three distinct looks in a single season.
Ghost Spirit Heritage: A sport of H. 'Ghost Spirit', 'Vermont Frost' drops the solid blue edge of its parent and replaces it with an all-over speckled effect that is truly one of a kind.
Small and Refined: A small-category hosta that fits beautifully in rock gardens, container plantings, and intimate shade borders where its colour transformation can be appreciated up close.
Pale Lavender Blooms: Bell-shaped pale lavender flowers appear in July, rising above the mounded foliage on green scapes.
Mason Hollow Provenance: Originated by Chuck and Sue Andersen — respected names in the hosta community — making this a collector-grade cultivar with a documented and celebrated origin story.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	Small category (exact dimensions unregistered)
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	White emerging → speckled → blue with white specks
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Vermont Frost' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and the full colour transformation is best observed when the plant is sited where you pass it regularly. We have grown it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC and find it a reliable and conversation-starting addition to any shade planting. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Vermont Frost', with its characteristic speckled blue foliage verified before it leaves Bécancour.
