Hosta 'Wu-La-La' | Blue-Green Giant with Chartreuse Margins Proven Winners® Shadowland®

Description

A Giant Statement Plant with Glowing Chartreuse Edges

Hans Hansen registered Hosta 'Wu-La-La' in 2020 as a sport of H. 'Empress Wu'. Walters Gardens introduced it through the Proven Winners® Shadowland® programme. It inherits the same commanding clump size as its parent, reaching 73 cm (29") tall and 173 cm (68") wide at maturity. Blue-green leaves with broad chartreuse margins brighten through the season, making it a dynamic presence in any shade garden. It is an outstanding anchor plant for large borders and woodland settings across Canada.

  • Leaf: Broadly ovate with a cordate base, lightly corrugated, 38 cm (15") long × 31 cm (12") wide with 15 vein pairs. Blue-green with chartreuse flat margins ranging from 1.3 to 6.4 cm (0.5 to 2.5") wide. Dull on top, glaucous bloom underneath — excellent substance throughout.
  • Seasonal Colour Change: Chartreuse margins intensify and brighten as the season progresses, adding evolving interest from spring through late summer.
  • Flowers: Pale lavender tubular blooms on scapes reaching 61 to 119 cm (24 to 47") high, appearing early to mid-July. Sets viable seed with green pods.
  • Size at Maturity: Giant — 73 cm (29") high × 173 cm (68") wide. Fast growth rate; reaches full size in approximately five to seven years.
  • Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliable across Canada from the mildest coastal gardens to the coldest prairie winters.
  • Patent: PP 31,309. Part of the Proven Winners® Shadowland® collection.

Grower's Tip: 'Wu-La-La' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, making it one of the most cold-hardy giants we grow. We have trialled it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC, and it performs with the same vigour as 'Empress Wu' — the clump size is genuinely impressive. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hosta 'Wu-La-La', PP 31,309, verified before it leaves Bécancour. If you are in Victoria, BC, expect the chartreuse margins to glow especially bright in your mild, moist summers.
