Description

A Celestial Blue Giant for the Shady Border

Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens bred Hosta 'Above the Clouds' for the Proven Winners® Shadowland® programme. He crossed 'Silver Moon' with 'Liberty' to achieve exceptional leaf substance and architectural form. The nearly round, deeply cupped leaves display a cloudy silver-blue with a puckered, corrugated texture. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Use it as a bold anchor in shady borders where its size and colour create lasting impact.

Leaf Shape and Texture: Nearly round, deeply cupped and corrugated with a heavy puckered surface — thick leaf substance holds its cloud-like texture throughout the season and provides natural slug resistance.
Leaf Colour: Persistent glaucous silver-blue with clean, rounded leaf margins; the waxy coating holds well into summer without rippling or fading.
Mature Size: 64 cm high × 140–150 cm wide (25 in × 55–59 in) — a bold, dense, weed-suppressing mound that anchors the shady border with authority.
Flowers: Pale lavender blooms on sturdy 90 cm (35 in) scapes in midsummer, attracting hummingbirds and pollinators above the dramatic foliage.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	64 cm × 140–150 cm (25" × 55–59")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Cloudy silver-blue; pale lavender flowers
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Hosta 'Above the Clouds' handles Canadian winters reliably from Zone 3 through 9. Protect the glaucous wax by siting it in dappled morning light, away from harsh afternoon sun — heat melts the coating and dulls the silver-blue to plain green. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC, and our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Above the Clouds', verified before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
