Description

A Radiant Halo for Your Shade Garden

Walters Gardens registered Hosta 'Afterglow' in 2012 as a sport of 'Climax'. It produces massive heart-shaped leaves with a wide yellow-to-gold margin and a rich forest-green centre. The high-contrast halo effect glows in the dim light of a woodland border. Its fortunei heritage gives it a reliable growth habit and structural elegance across zones 3–9. Use it as a premier focal point in large shaded beds or woodland borders.

Leaf Shape and Texture: Large, broadly ovate with a cordate base and light corrugation at maturity — thick leaf substance up to 30 cm (12 in) long provides excellent slug resistance and a tactile seersucker depth.
Leaf Colour: Rich forest-green centre framed by an exceptionally wide yellow-to-gold margin — a high-contrast halo effect that can occupy nearly half the leaf surface and glows in dappled shade.
Mature Size: 60 cm high × 90–120 cm wide (24 in × 36–47 in) — a commanding, upright-mounded specimen that anchors large shaded beds and woodland borders with authority.
Flowers: Tall, sturdy scapes of tubular lavender blooms in midsummer, attracting hummingbirds above the dramatic variegated foliage.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	60 cm × 90–120 cm (24" × 36–47")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Green centre with wide yellow-gold margins
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Hosta 'Afterglow' handles Canadian winters reliably from Zone 3 through 9. Give it dappled morning sun to help the wide margins transition from chartreuse to a brilliant buttery yellow — too much shade keeps them greener. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC, and our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Afterglow' with confirmed wide-margin definition and heart-shaped leaf structure, verified before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
