Hosta 'Ahhhs' | Blue to Blue-Green Large Hosta Rob Mortko Tiger's Eye Sport

Description

A Powdery Blue Giant That Earns Its Name Every Spring

Rob Mortko introduced Hosta 'Ahhhs' as a sport of 'Tiger’s Eye'. It is a large blue hosta with a seasonal colour journey that stops people in their tracks. Leaves emerge in rich powdery blue in spring and ripen to deep blue-green by midsummer. Moderate rippling adds tactile depth without coarseness, and the foliage holds good substance through the Canadian season. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9 and suits bold specimen or mass plantings in large shaded borders.

  • Leaf Shape and Texture: Broadly ovate with moderate rippling along the margins — a refined, architectural quality that adds tactile depth without appearing coarse, backed by thick, substantial leaf tissue.
  • Leaf Colour: Emerges in rich powdery blue in spring and transitions to a deep, elegant blue-green by midsummer — two distinct colour looks from a single plant across the season.
  • Mature Size: 51 cm high × 91 cm wide (20 in × 36 in) — a large mound ideal for filling gaps in shade borders or anchoring a woodland planting with sweeping blue-green texture.
  • Flowers: Pale lavender blooms rise above the blue canopy in July, adding graceful vertical interest at the peak of the summer garden.
Feature Specification
Size (H × W) 51 cm × 91 cm (20" × 36")
Hardiness Zone 3–9
Colour Powdery blue in spring; deep blue-green in summer
Light Requirements Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: To preserve the powdery blue as long as possible, place 'Ahhhs' in deep or dappled shade — excessive direct light can thin the waxy coating and shift the colour to green prematurely. It handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and we grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC where we wait for the spring blue to fully establish before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Rob Mortko selection, verified before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
