Description

A Regal Tribute to the Father of the American Hosta Society

Vic Santa Lucia registered Hosta 'Alex Summers' in 1989 as a sport of the classic 'Gold Regal'. He named it in honour of Alex J. Summers, first president and co-founder of the American Hosta Society. Wide chartreuse-to-gold margins streak dramatically into a dark green centre for bold, eye-catching contrast. It builds a stately, nearly perfect vase-shaped mound that anchors shade borders with natural authority. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9 and suits woodland gardens, specimen plantings, and large shaded borders coast to coast.

Leaf Shape and Texture: Heart-shaped with thick, heavy-textured substance — high-quality foliage that holds up well through the Canadian summer and offers natural resistance to slug damage.
Leaf Colour: Dark green centre with wide chartreuse-to-gold margins that often streak dramatically toward the centre — bold variegation that intensifies with gentle morning sun.
Mature Size: 55–60 cm high × 90–100 cm wide (22–24 in × 35–39 in) — a stately, upright vase-shaped mound that frames smaller companion plants beautifully at its base.
Flowers: Sturdy 70 cm (28 in) scapes rise in July bearing lavender bell-shaped blooms that attract local pollinators above the bold variegated foliage.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	55–60 cm × 90–100 cm (22–24" × 35–39")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Dark green centre, wide chartreuse-to-gold margins
Light Requirements	Partial to light shade; morning sun preferred

Grower's Tip: For the most vivid contrast between the dark green centre and the gold margins, choose a spot with gentle morning sun — deep shade tends to keep the margins more chartreuse than gold. It handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, making it a dependable performer across every province. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we monitor every 'Alex Summers' as it emerges each spring to confirm the wide, irregular gold margins are fully expressed before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hosta 'Alex Summers', verified before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
