Description

A Blue Giant of Prehistoric Proportions in the Shade Garden

Olga Petryszyn developed Hosta 'Amos' as an unregistered giant blue hosta, subsequently acquired by Dan Cauffman of Chesterton, Indiana. It is believed to be a seedling of H. 'Big John', inheriting that cultivar's massive scale and deep blue colouring. The enormous heart-shaped leaves emerge in a deep, dusky blue with heavy seersuckered corrugation and mature to a sophisticated blue-green through the season. Foliage is exceptionally thick and leathery with elite slug resistance. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9 and demands generous space to reach its full potential.

Colossal Landscape Presence: Reaches 75–80 cm (30–32") tall and 175–180 cm (69–71") wide at maturity, making it one of the true titans of the hosta world and an unmistakable anchor for large shade borders.
Intense Seersuckered Corrugation: Heavy, deeply puckered foliage adds incredible tactile depth and architectural interest that becomes more pronounced and impressive as the plant ages.
Elite Slug Resistance: Exceptionally thick, wax-coated leaves are virtually impenetrable to common garden pests throughout the Canadian growing season.
Steadfast Blue-Green Colour: Holds its cool, dark blue-green tones beautifully through the humid Canadian summer without washing out or fading.
Tall Near-White Flower Scapes: Elegant near-white flowers rise on 120 cm (47") scapes high above the massive canopy in midsummer, adding graceful vertical interest at the peak of the season.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	75–80 cm × 175–180 cm (30–32" × 69–71")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Deep blue to blue-green; near-white flowers
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Amos' requires deep, fertile soil and plenty of room to stretch — avoid planting it too close to structures where its massive leaves will be cramped, and give it the kind of open space you'd find in the sweeping woodland gardens of the Gatineau Hills where a giant blue hosta truly earns its name. It handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and we grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC where we monitor the emergence of these giant blue pips to verify the seersuckered texture before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Amos', confirmed before it leaves Bécancour.
