Description

Majestic Hybrid | Spreading Canopy | Architectural Presence

Hosta 'Arnold Black' is a majestic, large-scale treasure that brings the legendary genetics of H. montana macrophylla into the heart of the Canadian garden. Registered by the esteemed Dick and Jane Ward, this hybrid of Hosta 'White Vision' is a masterclass in architectural presence, forming a massive four-foot-wide mound that commands attention. It is defined by its substantial, broadly ovate leaves—reaching up to 14 inches in length—which feature a sophisticated dull finish on both the top and bottom. The foliage emerges with a striking golden-yellow hue, accentuated by 12 to 13 pairs of deeply impressed veins and moderately wavy, slightly rippled margins. This robust seedling is an ideal choice for gardeners from the prairies to the Atlantic who need a reliable, wide-spreading specimen to anchor a large shade border.

Why It Stands Out

Massive Spreading Habit: With a mature diameter of 121 cm (48"), this hosta creates a broad, golden carpet that effectively suppresses weeds and fills large landscape gaps.
Classic Montana Lineage: Inheriting the noble "look" of its H. montana ancestry, it features long, elegant leaves with a distinctive cordate (heart-shaped) base.
Pure White Floral Display: In late June, the golden mound is topped with 30-inch green scapes bearing delicate, tubular, pure white flowers for a crisp, clean summer aesthetic.
Textural Rippled Margins: The subtle rippling along the leaf edges provides a refined movement that prevents the large foliage from feeling static.

Technical Specs

Feature	Details
Size	61 cm Height / 122 cm Spread (24" H / 48" W)
Hardiness Zone	Standard Canadian Zones 3–9
Colour	Golden Yellow
Light Requirements	Partial Shade to Full Shade

Grower's Tip
To encourage the impressive 121 cm spread of Hosta 'Arnold Black', ensure it has plenty of "breathing room" in rich, moisture-retentive soil. Because this cultivar is prized for its massive leaf size and specific montana-style architecture, we monitor our stock in Bécancour to ensure the 12 to 13 vein pairs and wavy margins are perfectly established. This True to Type verification is our promise that the division you receive is the authentic Ward introduction, ready to bring its golden, spreading grandeur to your local landscape.
