Description

A Fresh Spring Border That Brightens to White

Hosta 'Avalanche' opens spring with a medium green centre framed by a chartreuse margin. Summer deepens the centre to dark green as the edge turns white. Randy Goodwin registered this seedling of Hosta 'Warwick Choice' in 2000. Its compact mound brings changing colour to the front of a shaded border. Tuck it beside a garden path where you can enjoy its seasonal transformation up close.

Changing Seasonal Colour: The chartreuse spring margin gives the foliage a soft contrast before summer brings a brighter white edge against dark green.
A Neat Border Accent: Its small mound fits comfortably along shaded paths and in rock gardens, giving the planting a clear, leafy outline.
Classic Leaf Texture: Ovate leaves with rounded, heart-shaped bases and pronounced veins add quiet texture beneath the changing colours.
Gentle Summer Flowers: Near-white, bell-shaped blooms rise above the foliage, adding a light touch without stealing attention from the leaves.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	33 × 60 cm (13 × 24 in)
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Spring: medium green centre with chartreuse margin. Summer: dark green centre with white edge.
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Give 'Avalanche' evenly moist soil and watch the margin brighten as spring moves into summer; chartreuse early foliage is part of its natural seasonal character. It handles Canadian winters in Zones 3–9. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, our True to Type standard focuses on the authentic 'Avalanche' and its characteristic seasonal colour change.
