Description

A Crisp White Edge That Stops You in Your Tracks

Randy Goodwin registered Hosta 'Avalanche' in 2000 as a seedling of H. 'Warwick Choice'. The ovate leaves have a deep forest-green centre and a wide, clean white margin that stays sharp and bright from spring through late summer. Leaves have 6–8 vein pairs and a rounded cordate base. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Use it at the front of a shaded border or in a rock garden where its crisp variegation can be appreciated up close.

Sharp White Margin: Wide, clean white edges provide dramatic contrast against the dark green centre, remaining crisp and bright throughout the growing season.
Compact and Tidy: Reaching 33 cm (13") tall and 60 cm (24") wide, it forms a neat mound well suited to edging, rock gardens, and small-space shade plantings.
Textured Ovate Leaves: Rounded cordate leaf bases and 6–8 deep vein pairs add rhythmic texture and a classic hosta form to the garden floor.
Near-White Blooms: Elegant near-white bell-shaped flowers rise on 45 cm (18") green scapes above the foliage, adding graceful vertical interest in summer.
Warwick Choice Heritage: As a seedling of H. 'Warwick Choice', 'Avalanche' inherits refined variegation and a well-behaved compact habit suited to Canadian shade gardens coast to coast.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	33 cm × 60 cm (13" × 24")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Dark green with wide white margin
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Avalanche' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and spring emergence is the best time to assess the clarity of the white margin as it develops. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC and monitor every plant closely to confirm the white edge is sharp and True to Type before it ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic 'Avalanche', verified before it leaves Bécancour.
