Description

A Bold Cerulean Throne for the Canadian Garden

If you're looking to buy a blue hosta in Canada, look no further. Commonly whispered to be the bluest cultivar in existence, Hosta 'Blue Jay' is a much sought-after masterpiece from the legendary Herb Benedict. This striking variety is the result of Hosta 'Dorset Blue' being self-pollinated — a bit of botanical self-love that is highly celebrated in the world of shade gardening. Whether you are planting in the humid Maritimes or the dry heat of the BC interior, this compact blue hosta mound maintains a neat, structural appearance that serves as a tour de force of cooling colour in any shade garden perennial border.

Intense Cobalt Pigmentation: The heart-shaped blue hosta leaves are saturated with a thick, powder-blue wax that creates an almost neon sapphire glow in the low-light corners of your garden.
Slug-Resistant Substance: These leaves aren't just for show; their thick, leathery texture provides the pinnacle of slug resistance and allows the mound to hold its shape against the unpredictable Canadian wind.
Late Spring Luminescence: Just as the garden is hitting its stride, 12-inch scapes emerge to display clusters of light lavender flowers that pop beautifully against the matte cerulean backdrop.
Tightly Knit Habit: Growing into a dense 2-foot wide mound, this blue foliage perennial offers a compact but high-impact footprint that is a standout choice for layering among smaller hostas.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	25.4 cm × 61.0 cm (10" × 24")
Hardiness Zone	Canadian Zones 3–9
Colour	Intense powder-blue
Light Requirements	Partial to Full Shade

Grower's Tip: To preserve that "bluest of the blue" finish, avoid overhead watering which can prematurely wash away the glaucous bloom. Because we are committed to our True to Type promise, we wait for those perfectly heart-shaped, intensely blue leaves to prove their parentage in our Bécancour trial beds before we ever ship a plant to your door.
